Qasim Umar (Omar) |
Pakistan |
 |
Born in Kenya, his family moved to Pakistan in 1957, shortly after his birth. His test career lasted just four years and 26 matches, scoring 1502 runs for an average of 36.63, including 2 double centuries, 1 century and 5 fifties. His maiden test century was in Adelaide against the Australian team that included Dennis Lillee & Co. In 1985-86 he blew the whistle on corruption in international cricket, naming a number of top players. His disclosure went unheeded and he was banned for seven years by the Pakistan Cricket Board. He was never selected to play for Pakistan again. He also made disclosures to the ICC investigation headed by ex Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon in 2001. It is a shame he is more remembered for this than for the outstanding cricketer he undoubtedly was. |
